Meet Sophie, our VP of operations

Meet the faces behind CaptureBites. Here we introduce Sophie Moons, our VP of Operations who, as it turns out, has been around scanners and IDP systems since she was a toddler.

In Sophie's case, you'd have to go back a little further than her first day at the company.

More than 20 years further, actually.

"You could say I grew up in the world of Document Management and scanning. As young as 4 years old, I got to help JD, who was working as the Director of Marketing at Kofax at that time, with a campaign for their newest product, VRS. They were creating a short video where I needed to scan some of my school drawings and showcase how easy the user interface of the software was.

There was one problem though, I was too scared of the scanner’s rollers. So my eldest sister, Isabelle, needed to be my stand-in to put the papers in the feeder."

The story of the video apparently stuck around. Sophie still sometimes hears it being paraphrased by JD’s former colleagues:
“Meet 4-year-old Sophie. She has some important documents to scan.”

Growing up, Sophie was regularly exposed to the world of Document Management through JD, who would talk passionately about his work and share stories from the industry. That gave her a positive impression of the world she would eventually become part of herself.

"I studied at KDG MTA (professional bachelor, IT) and, as a final thesis project, I created a scanner app that communicated directly with MetaServer. Working together with JD and Jean felt very organic and that’s how I organically enrolled in CaptureBites."

From scanning school drawings at four years old to developing software that communicates with MetaServer, it seems the industry was never too far away.

Sophie wears many hats at CaptureBites .

"I manage the development of new products and new features for our existing software. The latest big projects are the MetaServer REST API, Web Client and Access Control Manager."

But development is only one part of her role.

"I also provide support and configure DMS solutions for clients. On top of that, I am the webmaster of the CaptureBites website, perform general IT duties within CaptureBites (maintaining our physical and virtual machines, network and user management, making sure the printer keeps working, etc.)."

Sophie also creates and updates technical documentation for CaptureBites’ products, as well as training material such as the MetaServer tutorials and quizzes.

In other words, there isn't really one job description that covers everything she does.

"I usually wake up around 08:15, have a light breakfast and check my calendar and emails. I then greet my colleagues and strut to my desk, wind blowing through my perfectly combed hair, often forgetting my tea in the kitchen.

Throughout the day, I switch between handling support requests and calls to following up on the latest fixes / additions to our projects, testing, reporting, writing up new features and plenty of other tasks that come with managing software projects.

Around 18:00, I try to wrap up my work and have dinner. Although, since we have international clients in different time zones, that doesn't always happen. But I don’t mind, I’m a night owl by heart.

On an ideal day, I go to the gym before 21:00 for strength training. On an even MORE ideal day, I, instead, go around 06:30."

"For me, MetaServer strongest points are:

    • MetaServer is extremely flexible, but it still remains user-friendly. It’s like a big lego set where you can add and remove blocks wherever you like. Even I still learn new configuration techniques sometimes from clients and partners.
    • MetaServer evolves based on the needs of the customer and real-life use cases. We don’t just add features just for the sake of it. A big example is our policy on AI implementation. If the accuracy of the results significantly increases, or it actually benefits the user experience, only then will we implement it.
    • Very responsive support (which includes myself, not to toot my own horn). Most issues get resolved within the same day.
    • Transparent pricing and a sales team with expertise. After a single Teams meeting where we analyse your project, which we do for free (this is becoming rare, these days), we can already set up a quote to get you started.
    • The modular nature of MetaServer makes it very affordable software. You also don’t get lost in “feature-fatigue” where you only need to use 25% of a product’s features."

"Everyone’s input is valuable here. If you have an idea, you can easily present it to the team in a short amount of time.

This is a big plus, especially considering the stories I hear about big tech companies where you need to first jump through layers of bureaucracy and wait several weeks before getting an idea in front of the right person. At CaptureBites, things are more direct."

What's something you're surprisingly good at that has absolutely nothing to do with your job?

“I can make excellent ice cream, if I do say so myself. Mocha's my personal favorite.”

If your workday had a soundtrack, what song would be playing?

She initially went for the (obvious) choice:

Through the Fire and Flames by DragonForce

But then admitted that it would actually be more of a mix:

    • Stunner by Carter Vail,
    • Humility by Gorillaz
    • Dreams by Fleetwood Mac
    • Wave by Aura Urziceanu
    • ça pik un peu quand même by miki
    “I like variation.”

A pretty good way to also describe her role at CaptureBites.
